A friend of mine was deported 16 years ago to the Dominican republic, on charges of sexual assault. He did his time from September 1995 to January 1997 and later deported. They had informed him that after 5 years he could request to get his papers back. I wanted to know what is the process that he has to take to get back to the US?

It really depends upon the specific statute under which your friend was deported and his ties to the United States. Some criminal offenses allow for a person to return to the United States, while others provide no manner to re-enter or require a waiver. It would be in your friend’s best interests to meet with our office so we could review the immigration papers and criminal document to give the best assessment of the case.
